Quality Education Adds Value To Our Community

It seems that few of us are immune to the economic crisis our country faces. It affects us in different ways, whether it’s an established business closing overnight or someone close to us who is now unemployed. It’s time to put partisan politics aside and develop viable solutions for complex and difficult problems. The opportunity exists for state leaders to address the current crisis and put Arizona on a more stable and prosperous path.
The Kyrene School District had to make adjustments to balance the budget. Although the state has not given final word on educational funding levels, we have been cautious to prepare a budget that has flexibility. Some classrooms have more students in them this year than in the recent past, but the average class size ranges of (+1) have been maintained.
Through prudent financial planning the Kyrene School District has weathered the economic meltdown better than many area school districts. Thankfully, despite the economic woes of our state, Kyrene has been able to improve the quality of education through the voters’ approval of overrides and bond programs.
The Kyrene community is very clear about the fact that education is a top priority and continues to show this through voting in favor of these additional financial resources. Major enhancements to technology, lower class sizes in the primary grades, and proactive maintenance and upgrades to facilities are the most visible signs of what the district is able to do because of the support from the community.
Even if you don’t have children in school, it is clear that there are direct correlations between educational quality, community desirability and economic prosperity. Top quality educational programs not only increase the value of homes but also provide our students with the building blocks they need to become productive citizens and community leaders for the future.
The Kyrene School District is a good example of how high quality education has a positive impact on all aspects of the community. Let us continue to work together to create an Arizona that wisely understands the connections between a quality education, a healthy economy and a better future.
